There are many ways on how you could define different types of robots. As I have seen the possible divisions vary widely. The main reason for these differences is that different tutors often tend to have different views on what should be taught in "robotic".

For example - some tutors who teach robotics are usually mainly focused on industrial robotics, leaving aside the full service robots. Therefore, when speaking of types of robots generally speak of types of industrial robots. There is a reason for this, however - the vast majority of robotics engineers have to deal mostly with industrial robots in their careers.

However, industrial robots are not alone. Therefore, as I see by dividing the robots in the types of this division must be broad enough to include everything that can be understood as a robot.

There are two possible ways how this could be done. First, you could divide the robots in their application types and second - by the way you move (or not). I recognize that there are other possible ways of how to divide the robots in types, but in my opinion these two are the best. Also, I prefer to use these two classifications together. Thus two questions about a robot already answered - "What does?" and "How do you do?"

Types of robots by applying

Today, robots do a lot of different tasks in many fields and the number of jobs entrusted to robots is growing steadily. So in my opinion one of the best ways to divide the types robots is a division of application.
there Are:

* Industrial Robots - Industrial robots are robots that are used in a manufacturing environment. Usually these arms developed specifically for applications such as welding, material handling, painting and other articulate. Judging by sheer application of this type could also include some automated guided vehicles and other robots.

* Domestic or household robots - Robots used at home. This type of robots includes many very different devices, such as robotic vacuum cleaners, robotic pool cleaners, sweepers, cleaning gutters and other robots that can perform different tasks. Also, some surveillance and telepresence robots could be considered as domestic robots if used in that environment.

* Medical Robots - robots used in medicine and medical institutions. First and foremost - surgical robots. Also, some automated guided vehicles and perhaps raise helpers.

* Service robots - Robots Don ?? t fall into other types of use. These could be different data collection robots, robots made to display technologies, robots used for research, etc.

* Military Robots - Robots used in military. This type of bomb disposal robots including robots, robots various transport, reconnaissance aircraft. Often robots initially created for military purposes can be used in law enforcement, search and rescue and other related fields.

* Robots Entertainment - These are robots used for entertainment. This is a very broad category. It starts with toy robots like Robosapien or alarm clock running and ends with real heavyweights such as articulated robotic arms used as motion simulators.

* Space robots - I ?? Would highlight robots used in space as a separate type. This type include robots used in the International Space Station, Canadarm was used in a shuttle and Mars rovers and other robots used in space.

* Hobby and competition robots - Robots think. Followers line, sumo-bots, robots made just for fun and robots manufactured by the competition.

Now, as can be seen, there are examples that fit into more than one of these types. For example, there may be a deep sea exploration robot can gather some valuable information that can be used for military purposes.

Also, I've seen that a division is used in two types, consequently - the industrial and service robots. However, I can not see how a Mars exploration rover join one of these general types. So I used "service robots" in a more narrowly. In my version of a term "service robots" serves as "other". This is basically a type where robots do not fit into other types should fall into.
